How to resize a signature without cutting off the strokes

Prepare a readable signature JPG, choose fit instead of crop, and check the downloaded file before submitting an application.

Preserve the signature before reducing its file size

A signature can meet a KB limit and still be unusable because the first or last stroke was cropped, the ink became faint, or the writing is tiny inside a large white page. File size is only one part of the job. Start with a clear source and keep an untouched copy so that you can return to it.

Follow your application’s instructions for ink, paper, handwriting and who must sign. This guide does not establish those requirements, generate a signature, or verify that a signature belongs to the applicant.

1. Prepare the source image

Capture or scan the signature so every stroke is visible and the page is in focus. Inspect the source before compressing it: glare, motion blur and clipped pen strokes cannot be recovered by increasing output dimensions.

If the signature occupies a small corner of a full sheet, trim unnecessary surrounding paper in your device’s image editor first, leaving all strokes intact. FormAssets’ generic signature tool fits or centre-crops the whole input; it does not detect the handwriting or provide a movable crop box. Do not remove margins that your application specifically requires.

2. Copy the actual upload requirements

Keep the official upload screen open and note the format, width, height and any minimum and maximum file size. A search result snippet or a previous recruitment cycle is not a substitute for the current requirements. If DPI is specified, the generic tool alone is not sufficient to verify it.

The signature resizer starts with default values. They are editable starting values, not a universal standard. Its output is JPG; use a different workflow if your portal requires another format.

3. Choose fit, not crop

Set “Width in pixels”, “Height in pixels” and “Maximum file size (KB)”. Under “Image fit”, choose “Fit all, add white space”. This preserves the input’s proportions and places the whole image inside the requested frame. Any unused area is white.

“Fill frame, crop edges” also keeps proportions, but removes source edges when the shapes differ. It is not safe for a signature whose outer strokes occupy those edges. Fitting avoids that crop, but can make the writing too small if you have not trimmed excessive paper first.

A concrete fit-versus-crop example

Imagine a tightly framed source that is 600 × 150 pixels, going into a hypothetical 140 × 60 frame. With “Fit all”, the scale is the smaller of 140 ÷ 600 and 60 ÷ 150. The image becomes 140 × 35 pixels, leaving 25 pixels of total vertical white space, split above and below.

Filling that same frame instead uses the frame’s proportions to centre-crop the source: only the central 350 × 150 portion remains before resizing. That removes 125 source pixels on each side. If the signature extends into those sides, strokes disappear. These are geometry calculations for this example, not measured dimensions of your handwriting.

The underlying browser operation supports scaling and cropping separately; MDN documents how canvas draws a source region into a destination rectangle.

4. Prepare, download and inspect the actual output

  1. Select “Choose JPG, PNG or WebP” and choose the source. A PDF or HEIC file is not a supported input; export a supported image first rather than renaming its extension.
  2. Select “Prepare JPG”, wait for the result, then use “Download JPG”.
  3. Open the downloaded file. Check the first stroke, last stroke, dots and fine lines. Look for excessive empty space and compression damage. The original file preview is not evidence that the output is intact.
  4. Check the output’s size against both portal bounds. The generic tool enforces the maximum you enter, not an application-specific minimum.
  5. Upload that downloaded JPG to the correct field and inspect the portal preview before final submission.

When to stop resizing

If the source is already blurred or the writing is illegible at the required dimensions, make a clearer source instead of repeatedly compressing the last export. FormAssets can reduce encoding quality to meet the maximum size, so a successful download is not a readability verdict. It does not certify handwriting, remove shadows or guarantee acceptance. For a supported application, a source-linked application preset also handles its configured minimum size and any DPI metadata requirement; still inspect the image yourself.
